Are Your Finances Ruining Your Marriage?

There are several different significant things that can really take a toll on a marriage. Usually we might think that infidelity would be at the top of the list, but ranking right up there along with it is the state of the finances in a marriage. It is the root of a lot of divorces, especially these days.

You need to be aware of the warning signs that your financial affairs are having a bad effect on your marital state. Has it become increasingly hard for you and your spouse to have a civil conversation when it concerns money issues? Do you disagree on a regular basis about how your money is going to be spent? Even couples who have plenty of money have problems concerning money, but when money gets really tight it can make the disagreements even worse.

As with anything else in a marriage, sometimes you have to make compromises. This can be hard to do if one partner is a spender and the other is a saver. For the spender it is always something new that needs to be bought and for a saver there never seems to be anything that is needed enough to buy. When you are on a tight budget, there might not be anything left over after bills to save or spend. This will solve the spend it or save it question, but never having anything extra left over is strain in itself.

When you and your spouse can at least agree that the bills must come first before anything else, this is a good thing. Some couples have a real issue when one or the other might have a tendency to put off paying bills in order to have extra money. This could be a situation that might require some counseling. Sometimes you can find free counseling from a local church or community service if you can not afford to pay for it.

When you are constantly arguing over money, you need to make the subject off limits for the most of the time. It is better to set aside one certain time per week to discuss money issues and try to set rules about yelling and finger pointing if at all possible. When you start to act like children, then sometimes these rules will be in order. Make discussing money matters any other time taboo unless it might be an emergency of some sort. Your marriage is more than how your money situation is progressing, but it does a play a part. If you find that things are really getting out of control, counseling might do you a lot of good before it is too late.
